Santiago - Capital of Chile

Located in the center of the country this is the most populated Region of Chile. This region contains Santiago de Chile which is the country's capital. Most commerce and administrative centers are located in this region.

Attractions

Bellas Artes Museum:
This is the most famous art museum in the city and it offers both international and Chilean art in many different mediums.
Santa Lucia Hill:
Tree-covered hill near the center of the City. This is where, in 1541, Pedro de Valdivia founded the city of Santiago. The area was turned into a public park in 1872 that has numerous paths that wander up the hill. A stone tower at the top offers and excellent view of Santiago.
Cousiño Palace:
Was constructed in 1870. This was the private home of the Cousiño family whose name you will find on many fine wines in Chile.
The Central Market:
Actually consists of many markets, including a fish market, meat market, vegetable market, flower market and hundreds of individual booths where any number of things can be purchased. There is also an entire section devoted to many small restaurants where you can find some of the best seafood at prices unavailable elsewhere in the city.
O'Higgins Park:
Located in the district of Santiago. Amongst its attractions is "El Pueblito", which resembles a typical Chilean country village.
The Metropolitan Cathedral:
Located in the main square, stands on the same place where the first church in Santiago was once built; sorrounded by three important buildings: the Post Office, the National Museum of History and the Townhall of Santiago.
Parque Forestal:
Designed by a French landscaper on the model of Parisian parks. Walkers pass down tree-lined paths along the Mapocho river, past small squares and the Bellas Artes Museum.
Bellavista and Suecia neighborhoods:
Are the home to many restaurants, pubs, discotheques and cafes.

Outdoor Activities:

Maipo Canyon:
About forty minutes by car from downtown Santiago, offers an excellent outing for the weekend. Travel through small towns where people sell kneaded rolls, almonds, walnuts and wine. Along the road, different resorts offer open air pools, restaurants and picnic areas where you can have a barbecue.
El Morado National Park:
Is an special place for trekking or mountaneering. This is a beautiful park for taking a non-strenuous day hike. In two-and-half to four hours you can hike up to the glacier at the base of El Morado (5,200 meters), the towering peak that the park gets its name from. You can also camp at the small laguna if you would prefer to spend the night under a spectacular star filled sky.
Pirque:
Southeast of Santiago on the way to the Maipo Canyon. Is a little town sorrounded by vegetation and hidden in a picturesque valley. It has pure air and crafts expositions. This is also a wine growing area.
Pomaire:
This village southwest of Santiago, near Melipilla town is famous and known for its pottery. Watch potters at work, some potters continue to use ancient indigenous designs.
Río Clarillo National Reserve:
Is a nature preserve near Pirque Town. The river, forests, and wildlife, are the main attractions.
